چکیده

The participants of this Conference run mathematics outreach programmes and mathematics competitions in countries with very diverse educational and cultural traditions. It would be futile to try to seek a single universal solution to educational and methodological problems that we encounter in our work. However, we have one thing in common: we work with mathematically able children. It is likely that some of us feel that their work goes against the grain of prevailing trends in educational policy and practice. It is likely that many of us are familiar with such phenomena as the dumbing down of the curriculum and “teaching to test”. The task of explaining the importance of proper mathematical education to policymakers and to the wider public becomes ever more challenging. It is even more challenging to explain, to the lay person, the nature of mathematical abilities in children. Promoting and developing our work, we have to reach a wider circle of teachers and parents. Given a widespread prejudice against mathematics, what can we say to them about mathematics and mathematical abilities?

Frequency of Home Numeracy Activities Is Differentially Related to Basic Number Processing and Calculation Skills in Kindergartners

Home numeracy has been shown to play an important role in children's mathematical performance. However, findings are inconsistent as to which home numeracy activities are related to which mathematical skills. The present study disentangled between various mathematical abilities that were previously masked by the use of composite scores of mathematical achievement. Our aim was to shed light on t...

Intentional and automatic numerical processing as predictors of mathematical abilities in primary school children

Previous studies have suggested that numerical processing relates to mathematical performance, but it seems that such relationship is more evident for intentional than for automatic numerical processing. In the present study we assessed the relationship between the two types of numerical processing and specific mathematical abilities in a sample of 109 children in grades 1-6. Participants were ...

The Empathizing-Systemizing Theory, Social Abilities, and Mathematical Achievement in Children

The Empathizing-Systemizing (E-S) theory describes a profile of traits that have been linked to autism spectrum disorders, and are thought to encompass a continuum that includes typically developing (TD) individuals. Although systemizing is hypothesized to be related to mathematical abilities, empirical support for this relationship is lacking. We examine the link between empathizing and system...

Number sense or working memory? The effect of two computer-based trainings on mathematical skills in elementary school

Research on the improvement of elementary school mathematics has shown that computer-based training of number sense (e.g., processing magnitudes or locating numbers on the number line) can lead to substantial achievement gains in arithmetic skills. Recent studies, however, have highlighted that training domain-general cognitive abilities (e.g., working memory [WM]) may also improve mathematical...

Basic and Advanced Numerical Performances Relate to Mathematical Expertise but Are Fully Mediated by Visuospatial Skills

Recent studies have highlighted the potential role of basic numerical processing in the acquisition of numerical and mathematical competences. However, it is debated whether high-level numerical skills and mathematics depends specifically on basic numerical representations. In this study mathematicians and nonmathematicians performed a basic number line task, which required mapping positive and...
